Some Philadelphians Frustrated About Facebook Not Recognizing City By Its Real Name
By Social Media Editor Melony Roy
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- While Philadelphia is "near Camden," some Philadelphians are not happy that Facebook doesn't recognize the city by name in certain posts.
The Facebook page "Philadelphia is more than Near Camden, NJ" was created to get the attention of the social network. Philadelphia Facebook users are frustrated about their posts being tagged with "in Camden" or "near Camden."
"I think this another sense of Philadelphia Pride," says Pennsylvania Representative Brian Sims. "I'm very proud of this city and when we are doing things in the city, we want people to know."
On a recent trip to Facebook's campus, Sims mentioned the issue.
"It's not a legislative issue, it's not something that I get to work on in the Capital," he says, "but it was certainly something I've heard other Philadelphians reference and if I had the opportunity, I certainly wanted to raise the question."
Facebook is aware of the issue and is working on the problem.
"It has to do with geo satellite location," Sims says. "It's not specific to Facebook, but it's specific to the carriers and contractors that they utilize."
Sims says he hopes to have a follow up conversation with the social network.
"My only concern in all of this is that I make sure people are not disparaging Camden," Sims says. "I don't think that people in Camden would like to be CheckedIn in Philadelphia if they where doing things in Camden."
