Social Media Today: LinkedIn, Flickr, And Mashtags

LinkedIn Opens Its Publishing Platform To All Members

LinkedIn has expanded its publishing platform. Now all users can write and share long form posts to their LinkedIn profile. Previously, this publishing power was only offered to a select number of industry leaders known as "LinkedIn Influencers."

With this change, LinkedIn should experience an increase in user-generated content online and continue its push to get more users reading news on the platform.

The company first launched its "Influencers" network last fall with 150 "thought leaders," including President Obama, Richard Branson and Bill Gates.

Flickr Now Lets Users Insert Photos Into Comments

The photo based social network Flickr has improved its commenting system. Users can now insert photos into comments. The announcement  came via Twitter from Markus Spiering, Flickr's head of product.

This feature is only available on desktop, but will most likely appear on Flickr's mobile app soon.

Now You Can Eat What You Tweet

Frozen food brand, Birds Eye, is releasing a new product for the social media generation. Mashtags are a social networking themed potato snack made from British potatoes. It will feature five social media-friendly shapes, including the hashtag, @ symbol, and a smiley face.

For now these Twitter themed potatoes will only be available in the UK.
