Snow Forces Reduced Speeds, Adjusted Public Transportation Schedules

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- PennDOT has lifted the speed limit restrictions that were in place earlier due to the severity of the winter storm.

Speed limits were reduced today to 45 mph on several interstates and other routes in the region. All speeds are restored to their usual posted limits with the exception of Interstate 80.

Due to the severity of the winter storm, area transportation agencies are temporarily reducing the speed limit on several roadways in the region.

The Northeast Extension is CLOSED due to multiple accidents. A detour has been put in place:

All motorists must exit at Quakertown Interchange Exit 44.

Take State Route 663 North to State Route 309 South to US Route 202 South to State Route 63 West. This will bring you to the Lansdale Interchange (31/Old 31).

Winter Storm Prompts Flight Cancellations At PHL 

 

PennDOT recommends not traveling during winter storms, motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com.

Meanwhile Amtrak has modified service across the region:

Due to a major winter storm impacting the Northeast region, Amtrak is operating a modified schedule between New York and Boston on Thursday, Jan. 4, with a reduced frequency of Acela ExpressNortheast Regional and Downeaster service. Additionally, Shuttle service, operating between Springfield, Mass., and New Haven, Conn., will also operate on a modified schedule.

School Closings 

The full schedule of Keystone Service (operating between Harrisburg and Philadelphia/New York) and Empire Service (operating between New York City and Buffalo/Niagara Falls) trains will operate as scheduled.

Cancellations for Thursday, Jan. 4, include Northeast Regional service between Washington, D.C. and Newport News/Norfolk, Va., Auto Train service (operating between Lorton, Va., and Sanford, Fla.) andSilver Meteor service (daily between New York and Miami).

Silver Star (daily between New York and Miami) will only operate within Florida. Palmetto (daily between New York and Savannah, Ga.) will only operate north of Washington, D.C.
