Sibelius And Lutoslawski At Verizon Hall
By R.J. McKay
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Curtis Symphony Orchestra will perform Sibelius and Lutoslawski on Sunday, Jan. 25th at Verizon Hall.
Kensho Watanabe, the conducting fellow at the Curtis Institute, shared a little background.
"It's actually quite an unusual program, at least for Curtis. It features two composers that I don't think have performed in a long time…I think people have heard about Sibelius. Lutoslawski, especially, I think people are maybe not as familiar with. He's a Polish composer, one of the preeminent composers of the 20th century," Watanabe said.
And there's a guest conductor, Osmo Vanska, too.
"Sibelius V, for me, is one of my favorite symphonies. And it's going to be conducted by Osmo Vanska, the musical director of the Minnesota Orchestra. And he is well-known for being really the foremost interpreter right now of Sibelius' works."
