SEPTA Center City Trolley Tunnel Closing For Occasional Nighttime Maintenance

by Lynne Adkins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Starting this weekend, SEPTA will be closing its Center City trolley tunnel, at times, for maintenance and repairs.

The five-mile long trolley tunnel will be closed from 8pm Friday until 4:30am Monday the next three weekends, and during the same hours on weeknights for the next two weeks.

Septa General Manager Jeff Knueppel says the closures are needed to keep the system running safely.

"The first weekend we'll be doing rail welding, the middle weekend our power and communications and signals people are working in the tunnel, and the third weekend we're cleaning up all the track work and getting out of the tunnel," he said.

Cleaning and painting are also on the agenda. During the closures, passengers will be transferring at 40th street to the Market-Frankford Line.
