Runner Profile: Cathy Walker

Cathy Walker
Barto, Pa.

Years running: Ten years ago, a friend asked me to run a 5k, and I loved it. My next race was another 5K in honor of a family member. I stopped, and picked it back up again to do the Broad Street Run. I am hoping to attempt longer distances from this point on.

Favorite kicks: Nike and Adidas

Pre-race ritual: Tie and re-tie my shoes first, and then mild stretching followed by a mental pep talk

Pre-race snack: Sports drink and a protein bar

Tips for new runners: Wear good shoes!

Why she runs: I run for the same reason I go to the gym. At first it was about what I saw in the mirror. But now the beautiful and glorious thing about it is that there are so many good reasons to do it that have nothing to do with what you see in the mirror. I have found that it's about being strong in both body and mind. It's about pushing through and getting to the end – you feel beat up, but in your head you're like "YEAH!"
