Rowers Hit The Water And Take Advantage Of Warm Temps
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temperatures on Sunday are expected to break the record high of 64 set back in 1949. It's yet another great day for rowers who take to the Schuylkill River.
Rowers, like those here the University Barge Club, are used to being out on the Schuylkill in the frigid cold. So this balmy winter for Maria means more practice in summer attire.
"This is the first time in December I've been on the river in a tank top and shorts," she said.
Margaret Meigs with the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia, the organization that oversees Boathouse Row, says they'll take these temps, especially when thinking about the icy river last winter.
"Freezing off and on. We didn't really get back on the water until the end of March," Meigs said.
Club coach John Breen says the winter warm up is coming at a pretty good time.
"We're going into an Olympic year and we have athletes in this club that will be competing in the Olympic trials so having them be able to log miles on the water, in addition to their land training, is quite valuable," coach Breen said.
