Report Says Philadelphia Ranks First In Big Cities With Bad Drivers
By Jim Melwert
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Depending how you look at it, Philadelphia is either dead last among big cities, or number one for having the worst drivers.
In this report from Allstate, looking at cities with more than 1 million people, Philly comes in first in terms of – as they put it – car collision frequency. Out of the full list of 200 on Allstate's 2014 Safest Driving City Ranking, Philadelphia checks in at number 192. Philadelphia's driving got a little worse from the 2013 report, which has the city ranked at 189 out of 200.
Shonda Alstin from Olney would beg to differ. "I think Jersey drivers are the worst, they don't know how to drive," she said.
This study says the average driver in Philadelphia will get in an accident every 6.2 years, and is 61.2% more likely than the average American to get in a crash.
Upon further thought, Shonda says she agrees, "I guess Philadelphia is more aggressive, not polite, rude, a lot of road rage, so yeah."
Another driver on the Boulevard agreed as well, saying, "We're always in a rush, we're very aggressive. We don't concentrate, we just act like the road is just ours and we're the only ones on the road."
According to the report, Boston, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. all rank lower than Philadelphia at safe driving. The populations of those cities, however, are much less. There are nine cities in the U.S. with a population over 1 million, according to the 2010 census.
Fort Collins, Colorado is 2014's safest city. The point of the survey, they say, is to try to help the cities at the bottom of the list become safer.
