MLB Elects Rob Manfred As New Commissioner
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The MLB Owners met in Baltimore, Md for owners meetings and the main task of the day was to vote on the new MLB Commissioner. Major League Baseball has announced that the new commissioner will be Rob Manfred, the Chief Operating Officer for the league.
Several votes were taken on Thursday as 23 out of thirty votes are needed to name the new commissioner. According to Jon Heyman, Manfred had come up just one vote shy earlier in the day receiving 22 out of 30 votes. He reports that the other eight votes went to Red Sox part-owner Tom Werner which caused the owners to take a break and return to the vote later.
Manfred will take over for Bud Selig on January 24th, 2015. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer last September and has worked for Major League Baseball in a full-time capacity since 1998.
