Rally Planned To Petition For Increased Security At Southwest Philadelphia School

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Concerned parents and staff plan to rally for increased security at a Southwest Philadelphia school.

The rally comes after a substitute teacher was reportedly assaulted in the hallway of Bartram High School in Kingsessing earlier this month.

Police say the attack began with a verbal altercation between the 18-year-old student and the teacher inside a classroom and escalated.

"You can't change the environment at a school if there aren't enough adults to enforce the rules and be models for acceptable behavior," said Philadelphia Federation of Teachers president Jerry Jordan. "Years of cuts to public education have left schools like Bartram severely understaffed, which puts the safety of educators and students at risk."

Three teachers have been assaulted there in the past month.
