Quest Diagnostics Announces Security Breach Affecting 34,000 People

MADISON, N.J. (CBS) -- Quest Diagnostics has announced a security breach affecting thousands.

The company said the breach happened on Nov. 26, 2016 when an unauthorized third-party gained access to the internet application MyQuest by Care360 on Quest's network and obtained Protected Health Information of approximately 34,000 people.

Quest says the data included name, birth date, lab results and some phone numbers. According to the press release, the breach did not include Social Security numbers, credit cards or insurance information.

Quest says as of now, "there is no indication that individuals' information has been misused in any way" but the breach is definitely causing concern for costumers.

"It's unfortunate but we don't have a full proof way of guaranteeing our cyber-security," said Elizabeth Haverfeld. "It's happened with health insurance companies, retail companies. [It's] hard to protect your information."

"I actually went to Quest Diagnostics recently but I have nothing to hide," said Ed Thomas.

Quest serves one in three Americans each year and half of physicians and hospitals in the US.

Affected customers have been notified by mail. Quest continues to investigate and is currently evaluating their systems. The company has also established a number to call for people who have questions about the incident. The number is 888-320-9970.
