Positively Philadelphia: 'Honey's Angels' Helps Struggling Families
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's always amazing how generous people are, and the ways they find to help those in need.
Honey's Angels began in 2006 after Cathy McVey Palmer lost her mother, Helen "Honey" McVey.
"She loved cooking and she loved to comfort people with her food," Cathy says, "so a Thanksgiving food drive seemed like the perfect way to honor her memory and keep her legacy alive."
The first year, they served 17 families. Now, it's in the hundreds, and the whole operation is put together in the basement of her Mayfair home.
"The whole basement will be packed with food, and boxes, and turkeys, canned goods, and everything else you can imagine to make a great Thanksgiving meal," explains Cathy.
Cathy's mother's name was Helen, but...
"Her little sister couldn't say the name 'Helen' when she was little, and nicknamed her 'Honey,' and it stuck," she says.
Honey's Angels is run by a large group of volunteers and donations from family, friends and strangers.
