Poll: Most Americans Feel A Terrorist Attack In The U.S. Is Imminent
MONMOUTH, NJ (CBS) – A new poll finds the majority of Americans are fearful about a domestic terrorist attack following the one in Paris and doubtful that ISIL can be stopped even if U.S. troops get involved.
According to the Al Jazeera America/Monmouth University Poll, most Americans feel it's likely a terrorist attack will occur in America within months.
Twenty-eight percent feel a similar attack is very likely and 45% say it is somewhat likely.
Just one in four of those polled felt an "imminent terrorist attack" is either not very or not at all likely.
Furthermore, 49% of Americans say the government is not doing enough to prevent such an attack from happening. Democrats (57%) were more likely to feel the U.S. government is taking adequate steps to prevent terrorism, but 67% of Republicans say it's not.
And three-quarters of Americans feel ISIL – or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – is a major threat to homeland security. Forty-five percent of Americans feel ISIL can only be stopped if U.S. troops are sent to the Middle East, even if they don't support that.
The poll was conducted by phone in mid-January 2015 and included 1,003 adults. The margin of error is +/- 3.1 percent.
