Poll: Americans Want More Women In Political Office

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The government would do a better job if there were more female leaders in place, most Americans say.

According to a recent Gallup poll, 63% of Americans surveyed feel the government would govern better if more women were in political office. That's up from 57% in 1995 and 2000.

Sixty-nine percent of women want more females in government, as do 55% of men. Self-identifying liberals, unmarried women and women between 18 and 49 are most optimistic about female leaders, and a large majority of African-Americans, Democrats and people between the ages of 18 to 29 are also in favor of increased female leadership.

Sadly, while 46% of Republicans feel positive about women in office, nearly one-fifth of them say the country would be governed worse if more women were in positions of political power. That's the highest percentage, Gallup says, among any demographic.
