Double Shooting Leaves Woman Dead, Teen Girl Injured In Trenton
TRENTON, NJ (CBS) -- Investigators are looking for a gunman, and a motive, after a double shooting in Trenton. The shooting left a 58-year-old Wilma Rutledge dead, and a 14-year-old girl wounded.
Several bullet casings littered the scene of a double shooting in Trenton, New Jersey, it happened at Carver Lane and North Willow Street just after 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
"Oh, firecrackers. My husband said it's nothing but firecrackers. We were sitting in our car listening to music, and then next thing I know I said, 'No, that's a gun,'" said Teresa Herman.
Herman and her husband were sitting in their car when they say they heard the rapid gunfire. They got a glimpse of Rutledge being shot.
"The lady pulled up," Herman said. "She got out of the car. And this other car pulled behind here, they got out and started shooting. Boom, boom, boom -- everybody thought it was firecrackers, and next thing you know, she fell."
Rutledge, who neighbors say lived in the neighborhood for years, died in the hospital. A 14-year-old girl was also shot in the torso and arm. The shooting happened in broad daylight as children were getting out of school.
"It was just very shocking, because she is a very nice lady," said neighbor Dixie Conner. "She's been living here for a long while. I've known her for maybe over 10 years because I've been in the area for a while. And it was just shocking and sad."
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still very much unclear. Police are still trying to piece together what if any relationship the 14-year-old girl may have had to Rutledge.
