Police searching for gold Nissan Maxima involved in hit-and-run that killed motorcyclist in Camden
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Police are searching for a vehicle involved in a crash that left a motorcyclist dead in South Camden on Tuesday. The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. at the corner of Mount Ephraim and Sayres Avenues.
"It's just very important to find the driver responsible, so we can determine what occurred and hold him responsible for his actions," Camden County Police Deputy Chief Janell Simpson said.
The motorcyclist was driving north on Mount Ephraim Avenue while the car was going south. The car then turned left onto Sayrs Avenue right into the path of the motorcyclist who had the right of way.
Police say the driver of the motorcycle, 41-year-old Willieant Cooper, was transported to a local hospital where he died.
"The vehicle involved is a 2000 to 2003 Nissan Maxima, gold in color, missing its rear bumper. The bumper was left at the scene of the accident and we also believe that his rear windshield was shattered from the impact," Simpson said.
Police say several drivers who witnessed the hit-and-run called 911.
"My heart goes out to the family. But I'm sure they will want closure and they want to know who struck their loved one, and what caused the accident. I'm sure they will want to know who did it just for closure purposes," Simpson said.
Police say even though the surveillance video they've obtained from the scene isn't very helpful, they do have substantial leads in the case and hope to make an arrest soon.
