Police: Man Attacks Clerk With Knife At Center City 7-Eleven

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police say a clerk was stabbed several times during a violent attack inside a 7-Eleven convenience store in Center City.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. Sunday along the 1300 block of Market Street.

Police say a man walked into the store and asked for a pack of cigarettes. After the cashier bagged the cigarettes the man asked for five more packs. Police say when the man was told the price of the additional cigarettes he pulled a large knife from his pants pocket and attempted to stab the clerk in the head.

Authorities say the man then jumped on the counter and slashed the cashier in the head, neck and shoulder.

Police say the clerk fought back and was able to knock his attacker off the counter to the floor. That's when, police say, the suspect fled the store, leaving the knife, a black hooded jacket and the cigarettes behind.

The 58-year-old victim was taken to Hahnemann Hospital in stable condition.

Police were looking for the suspect who is described as a black man, 45 to 50 years old, 6' tall with a thin build and a beard. Investigators say he was wearing a dark shirt with a white vertical stripe down the sleeves, blue jeans and black and white sneakers. Police believe the suspect may be homeless.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
