Philly Police Commish On National Night Out: 'A Chance For People To Really Interact'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Tonight communities around the area are set to join with law enforcement to take a stand against crime.
Tuesday marks annual National Night Out, which is a nationwide effort to raise awareness about safety in neighborhoods.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says this is the eighth year Philadelphia is participating.
"Yes, it's the eighth one. Of course, I was in DC before and I did about nine there."
Commissioner Ramsey says, "The first Tuesday of August every year National Night Out happens across the country. It's an opportunity for police, the community and businesses to come together and renew their relationship, and their efforts, to make all of our neighborhoods safe."
He adds that residents should come out tonight, but says, "We need to be engaged 365 days a year because that's the only way we really have an impact on communities. Get involved, stay involved. Take ownership of some of the issues and problems and work with us. A lot of positive things will happen as a result of that."
Ramsey says there are almost 40 events taking place across the city.
"It's a chance for people to really interact. Of course, you also have the cookouts and that sort of thing."
