Philadelphia weather: Mostly cloudy New Year's Day, chance for light passing rain
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Happy New Year!
We're ringing in 2024 with a mostly cloudy Monday with seasonably mild highs in the mid-40s. There are chances for light passing rain showers, but no major impacts are expected.
So if you're heading into Center City for the New Year's Day Mummers Parade, you could see a few light sprinkles. When the parade begins at 9 a.m., temperatures will be in the upper 30s. While the chance of precipitation is not zero, rain will be light and relatively short-lived.
Feel like it's been forever since we've had snow? You're not wrong. It's been more than 700 days since the region last had a snowfall of 1 inch or more.
Skies will clear tonight allowing the temps to drop back to below freezing for Tuesday morning but those clear skies will prevail, bringing tons of sunshine to the region on Tuesday.
Tracking a potentially major snow storm
By late Wednesday/early Thursday a weak weather system will pass, bringing a chance for some early snow showers on Thursday, however little to no accumulation expected at this point. Fast forward to the weekend and we're watching a major weather system that will likely have significant impacts for the entire mid-Atlantic Region, in the form of snow, rain and wind.
Where exactly the core of the system ends up will make a HUGE difference in what we experience here in the Delaware Valley. For example, if the core stays south of our area we'll be on the northern (colder) side of the storm and we'll have the chance for widespread snow.
If the core tracks north of our area we'll be mainly on the warm side and see much more rain. Definitely bears watching as this system will likely bring significant snow in the areas north of the core. Timing, at this point, is late Saturday night into a good portion of the day Sunday.
