Philadelphia weather: Mild and sunny again Saturday, Next Weather Alert for Sunday and Monday
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Friday certainly was a great turnaround after what was somewhat of a chilly week. High temperatures Friday afternoon reached into the mid-upper 50s and will do it again Saturday afternoon before a strong storm system arrives Sunday.
The CBS Philadelphia NEXT Weather Team has already issued a Next Weather Alert for Sunday evening through Monday morning in advance of yet another storm system set to arrive through the second half of the weekend into early Monday morning.
The good news is that like last weekend Saturday will give us plenty of time to get things done around the house or run errands before conditions steadily deteriorate Sunday.
An area of low pressure will develop out of the eastern Gulf of Mexico and track northeast along the eastern seaboard through the day on Saturday. By Sunday morning the center of the strengthening low-pressure system will be near the coast of South Carolina, but by lunchtime light showers ahead of the approaching storm system will begin to move into the Philadelphia area.
Showers will become more widespread through Sunday afternoon with heavy rain moving into the region after sunset Sunday night. In the meantime, as the center of low pressure tracks right up the east coast the strengthening storm system will also bring with it windy conditions.
Gusts along the coast are expected to reach up to 50 mph with 30-40 mph gusts farther inland into the Delaware Valley. The elevated winds could cause power outages with the possibility of downed trees or limbs.
Widespread showers with pockets of heavy rain will continue through the early morning hours with rain totals likely ranging between one to three inches with some locations potentially receiving up to four inches.
With the combination of the heavy rain and already saturated soil from last weekend's storm, there is an elevated risk for the potential for flooding, especially low laying areas and near streams and creeks. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the entire area from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon.
The center of low pressure will track northeast of the region through Monday shifting the winds to the northwest bringing the rain to an end and beginning to usher in much cooler air. While the rain will taper off through midday Monday the winds will remain quite gusty with wind gusts between 30-50 mph into early Monday afternoon.
As the main area of low pressure continues to track northeast away from Philadelphia Monday night another low pressure system is expected to develop in its wake just off our the Jersey Shore. This low pressure system could reintroduce the chance for precipitation which when mixed with the colder air rushing in may result in some snow showers on Tuesday. At this time snow accumulations are not expected to be more than a light dusting at most.
