Philadelphia Non-Profit Offers Way To Show Gratitiude To Police Year-Round

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Friday was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and a Philadelphia non-profit is offering a way for people to show gratitude for the men and women in blue year-round.

Since 1998, the Philadelphia Police Foundation has been supporting programs and equipment needs of the Philadelphia Police Department, like raising money for ballistic vests and lights for police bicycles, funds that are not covered by the city budget.

"Whatever they want to donate for we do have on our website areas that we want donations for that the commissioner has identified," says Maureen Rush, the organization's president, "but frankly whatever someone wants to donate it gets put right directly to the use of the Philadelphia police, and we are real proud to do that in Philadelphia."

Rush says a gift to the foundation will go towards keeping officers safe as they protect and serve the public.
