Suspect dead, officer hospitalized after being shot in Philadelphia's Fairhill section: police
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A suspect has died and a Philadelphia police officer is expected to recover after being shot in Philadelphia's Fairhill neighborhood Friday night, police said.
Officials said two officers were patrolling near Mascher and Cambria Streets around 8:45 p.m. when they saw a man with a gun inside a corner store.
Police say that man fired at least two shots toward the officers, hitting one of them twice.
The injured officer's partner returned fire, shooting and killing the suspect.
The officer and suspect were both rushed to Temple University Hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead.
Police said the officer was shot twice, once in the upper right thigh and once in the lower thigh. The officer is expected to be released on Sunday.
Police said they are also looking for another person of interest who might have taken a gun from the scene.
Philadelphia police posted surveillance images on X showing a man in a red zip-up top with a narrow stripe in the middle, light-colored jeans with a rip on the left knee, and dark-colored shoes. He was wearing a black hat with a red brim and a red design - possibly a Jordan brand jumpman hat.
Mayor Cherelle Parker, Commissioner Kevin Bethel, and FOP President Roosevelt Poplar addressed the public Friday night.
"I will not sit here and tell you that it's acceptable," Commissioner Kevin Bethel said. "I will not ask you for your prayers. I will ask you to support us and our operations and support us in making sure that we keep these individuals who have guns and want to hurt not only my officer but the many people in this community. That's not acceptable."
"These officers putting their lives on the line on a daily basis to protect and serve our city, that their mayor has their back," Mayor Cherelle Parker said. "That their police commissioner has their back. And each and every one of the leaders that you see here standing with me today, we have their backs."
