No Shortage Of Events, Activities Close To Home On Memorial Day Weekend
By Marcy Norton
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial start of summer at the shore, but not everyone is headed to the beach this weekend. If you're staying closer to home, there's plenty to do.
First and foremost, Memorial Day is a time to remember the nation's war dead. Independence National Park plans to honor veterans by featuring greeters dressed as soldiers from the American Revolution, and offering musical events, all leading up to a flag raising ceremony at Independence Hall. Laurel Hill Cemetery is planning a parade leading to the grave of General George Meade, a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg.
The Morris Arboretum's Garden Railway returns Saturday with an art and architecture theme, including mini versions of famous Philadelphia sculptures and buildings.
The Devon Horse Show is this weekend, with added exhibitions at the country fair on the horse show grounds.
This is also fun on the Delaware River Waterfront at Spruce Street Harbor Park, where last winter's ice rink is transformed into a riverside roller rink. There's also a kids' play area, a boathouse style lodge and beer garden.
Kids can meet their favorite superhero Saturday at the Please Touch Museum.
And The Philly Pops is offering a "Salute to Broadway" in a performance at Longwood Gardens in Kennet Square
If sports are your thing, check out the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship at Lincoln Financial Field, which runs through Monday.
