NEXT Weather: Potential for torrential downpours throughout day

NEXT Weather: Sunday midday update as flash flood warnings appear throughout region

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Two tornado warnings and several flash flood warnings were issued Sunday morning and early afternoon, with more potential severe weather likely through the evening.

More heavy rain and flash flooding is likely across all of the area this afternoon and evening, so everyone in our region needs to pay attention to their surroundings and be prepared for more road closures. Lightning and gusty winds may accompany some of the remaining storms into this evening as well.

Turn around, don't drown is the mantra as little as 8 inches of moving water can carry a car away. With the ground already so saturated, it will not take much in the way of additional rain to cause flooding issues.

While scattered storms into this evening have the heavy rain potential as the main threat, some of the storms could produce strong, gusty winds capable of downing trees and power lines, as well as produce an isolated tornado. If a tornado warning is issued, the best place to go is your basement, or lowest level of your home, away from windows.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through midnight tonight, but the bulk of the rain will be out of the area before 10 p.m., with clearing skies overnight into Monday morning.
