Mayor Nutter Visits City Schools To Highlight Importance of Education Funding

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mayor Michael Nutter today began a series of school visits he hopes will highlight the unique programs that would benefit from an increase in city and state funding.
In the cinematography lab at Roxborough High School, the mayor looked over the shoulder of sophomore Monet Jones (below) as they watched a school-produced public service announcement.

Nutter says it's an example of what the school district can do with predictable funding.
"What we've been talking about in past years with regard to deficits and cuts -- what we're talking about now is investments."
Nutter has proposed a nine-percent property tax increase to provide $105 million in new city money for schools. But he won't predict its fate in City Council.
"I'm not going to prejudge what the Council's going to do," Nutter said today. "What I do know is that virtually every member has expressed support for educating our children."
The mayor plans visits to five more district and charter schools this month.
