Local SPCA Hoping Hundreds Will Adopt Pets This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you're looking to adopt a pet, the SPCA can help, especially this weekend.
The ASPCA's annual "Mega Match-a-thon" is underway all weekend at the Pennsylvania SPCA, on East Erie Avenue in Kensington.
"And we're looking to adopt out hundreds of animals," says Sarah Caruso, communications and marketing manager for the PSPCA. "And we're partnering up with other local animal shelters. So we have Act Philly, Women's Humane, Operation Ava, Morris Animal Refuge, and PAWS."
Caruso says that when you adopt a pet, you help make room for other animals waiting to be rescued.
"We get animals from a variety of sources, sometimes from owners who are no longer able to take care of them. Sometimes owners have their own health problems or are unable to afford care. We also get a lot of animals from our humane law enforcement," she tells KYW Newsradio.
Caruso says she hopes folks who are looking for a pet will consider adoption.
"We always have adoption events, but this one is huge and it's annual, and we're trying to adopt out over 400 animals over a three-day period."
What's required?
"You want to make sure that you've checked with your family members; you want everybody to be on board, because it is a big commitment. If you have other pets, tell us about them. Also, if you have children, you want to bring them along so that they can meet the pet and make sure that it's a good fit all around."
