Local Political Analyst Expects Different Presidential Campaign From Hillary Clinton
By Mike Dougherty
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hillary Clinton surprised nobody Sunday afternoon when she officially announced her intention to run for president again. KYW Newsradio spoke with a local political science professor about her second run at the oval office.
Despite getting more than 18-million votes in the 2008 primary, Clinton lost to Barack Obama. The social media prowess of the Obama Campaign was a big reason why he won.
La Salle political science professor Mary Ellen Balchunis expects a different outcome this time.
"The contacts that she made, the lessons that she learned out in the caucuses," Balchunis says, "fundraising, dealing with the media -- that should be just invaluable to her."
Clinton is asking voters to give her another chance. This time around, Balchunis says Clinton will try to make social media the tool that pushes her into the oval office.
She says Clinton hired some of the Obama social media staffers because she recognized how important it is to connect with voters online.
"The experience of running a campaign just can't be discounted. I've heard people run for office say their first time was amateur act and in political science, we teach that it often takes a second time to get elected."
Balchunis says one of Clinton's platforms is equal pay for equal work, and that should make her very popular among female voters.
