A 12-year-old boy died on Monday after a tree limb fell on him while he was playing in his backyard with a friend in Lawrence Township, New Jersey, police said.

It happened at around 12 p.m. on the 100 block of Eldrige Avenue in Lawrence Township, according to police.

Police said they found the 12-year-old under a fallen tree and began CPR once they arrived on the scene. He was taken to Capital Health Systems Regional Medical Center, where he died due to his injuries.

Police said the tree limb fell because of gusty winds.

The Lawrence Township School District will have counselors available this week to assist students and staff, according to police. Therapy dogs and members of the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition will also be on school grounds to provide assistance.

The boy's identity hasn't been released.

The incident is under investigation.
