La Salle University Professor Turns The Page After 56 Year Career

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Sunday was graduation day for many La Salle University students, but there was one professor that was celebrating for a different reason.

Sid MacLeod started his tenure at La Salle in 1959, first teaching English and then gradually moving to the Communications department, teaching media and journalism.

"When we started, it was open reel video tape," Macleod reminisced. "Certainly there is not as much emphasis on what you have to give as far as technology. I can remember in the beginning, I use to say, 'this is the play button, this is the rewind button.' If I did that today, they would take me to the loony bin."

When he got to the communications department, MacLeod embraced the ever-changing technology.

"Everyone's now got a video camera and a camera on their phone, Macleod said. "I think because it's too easy though, a lot of junk gets in."

Though he was the professor, MacLeod said he was the one who learned a lot.

"Being involved with the technology, I have been the one having to keep up with it," said Macleod. "I read and study and do all this because it's something they will come in contact with and it will impact them, and how can I help them understand it."
