Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Mohonk Mountain House
By Jay Lloyd
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (CBS) -- Imagine a 19th-century resort that keeps pace with 21st-century lifestyles and tastes.
That's the Mohonk Mountain House, nestled between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains.
The view is staggering as the morning haze lifts over the Mohonk Mountain House, built on a craggy cliff overlooking a shimmering lake.
"People often tell us it looks like a Victorian castle," says Nina Smiley, part of the family that launched this sprawling wonder in the age of Queen Victoria as a relaxing retreat that now hosts 85 miles of hiking trails.

And, recreation guide Alex Sherwood notes, there's much more:
"We've got mountain bike riding, tennis, we've got lake swimming, boats -- paddleboats, canoes, kayaks -- fishing.
Meals here are dynamic. Lunch and dinner are both elegantly prepared.
"And then you need all that hiking and swimming and golfing to work it off," says one guest with a laugh.
