IRS Issues Warning About E-Mail Phishing Scam

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Just weeks before the April 15th tax deadline, the Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers about a new email scam.

There's a new phishing scam in the form of an email that appears to be from the IRS. Pennsylvania IRS spokeswoman Jennifer Jenkins says it's the email includes a bogus case number telling taxpayers their 2013 income is flagged for review because of a document processing error, so the case has been forwarded to the taxpayer advocate service.

"Neither the IRS nor the taxpayer advocate service will initiate contact with the public by email
nor will we initiate contact by texting or social media," Jenkins said.

The email directs the recipient to a link that goes to a web page soliciting personal information. She says it's just a scam and you should delete the message.
