Icy Conditions Cause Messy Commute Across Philadelphia Region
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The wet weather and icy conditions were making for a slippery and slow commute Monday across parts of the Philadelphia region.
A winter weather advisory was issued across New Jersey and for much of Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia International Airport was reporting delays on some arriving flights. The FAA imposed a traffic management program, which meant some arriving flights were being delayed an average of close to 90 minutes.
Travelers with scheduled flights and others with plans to pick up someone at the airport were urged to check with the airline by calling 1-800-PHL-GATE or by visiting the airport's website for the most up to date flight information.
On the rails, SEPTA and PATCO trains were running on or close to schedule. But SEPTA cautioned its riders that this was not the day to run to the train or bus.
"We're asking people when they're up and get going to be really careful walking to the stations, around the platforms," said spokeswoman Heather Redfern, " and when they're getting on and off our trains, trolleys and buses."
New Jersey Transit was cross honoring tickets systemwide.
Traffic along most major roadways was moving with few delays -- but forecasters were cautioning drivers to be extra careful. Road crews spent much of the night and early morning spreading salt, but there were still plenty of icy spots on some side streets, parking lots and sidewalks.
The icy conditions also caused numerous school delays and even several closings across the region.
