Iconic Pottstown Staple Closing After Nearly A Century
POTTSTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Maybe its the logo, or the location, or maybe the people because there is just something that feels familiar about "The Very Best".
The eatery with the telling name has been a Pottstown staple since 1921, earning it's title with Steaks, Hamburgers, but mainly Hot Dogs.
Once inside, it's like a glimpse into a bygone era, one that will soon be gone itself.
"Its a bad day for Pottstown," said Bill Krause, a Pottstown native who has been sitting at the counter weekly for as long as he can remember.
After 94 years "The Very Best" will be closing up for good on Saturday.
"A lotta people are going to miss it," Krause added.
The shop was origionally located a few blocks up from where it sits now, but moved to High Street in the mid 1970s. Thats where they have been serving up a true tase of Americana wrapped up inside of a white bread bun.
"We are making up for lost time," said one customer, "we've been here twice this week!"
Despite the community's mad rush for their final dogs, the store owner told Eyewitness News that dwindling sales through the years simply took a serious toll.
Surrounded by vacant storefronts, it's clear that Pottstown is going through a transitional time.
So like a good friend leaving town, regulars shared stories and posed for pictures as they say goodbye to a place they've always known to be "The Very Best."
