I-76 reopens after crash with dump truck and U-Haul injures 3 people in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Three people were hospitalized Saturday morning after a crash on I-76 in Philadelphia that shut down the highway's westbound side for several hours.
Some time before 3:30 a.m., troopers were called to the scene near the South Street exit for a reported crash, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Investigators believe a gray SUV and a U-Haul got in a minor crash on the highway. The drivers then stopped in the right lane and the people in the SUV got out and spoke with the driver of the U-Haul.
While they were talking, a dump truck hit the back of the U-Haul, sending it forward. It then struck the three occupants from the SUV, police said.
All three people were taken to a hospital. One person, a 34-year-old man from Collingdale, Pennsylvania, had moderate injuries and was listed in stable condition, according to police. The other two – a 24-year-old woman from Buffalo, New York and a 25-year-old woman from Aurora, Ohio – were listed in "extremely critical condition" after sustaining severe injuries.
The highway reopened around 11:30 a.m., the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management announced.
