Home Finance Expert: Become Vigilant About Your Credit
By Lynne Adkins
SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. (CBS) -- The FBI is warning that more retailers could be hit with credit card breaches of the type that struck Target and other major chains during the height of the holiday shopping season (see related story).
But if you weren't victimized, that doesn't mean you can rest easy.
Mark Zinman, a certified public accountant in Southampton (Bucks County), says every consumer should get his or her free credit report every year -- and look carefully for problems:
"Charge cards or items on there that you don't recognize, as well as keeping an eye on charge (accounts) you use for any charges that aren't authorized or you don't remember making."
Also, Zinman advises, sign up to view your credit card statement online so you can review charges even before the bill arrives. That way, if there is a problem, you can report it immediately.
