Three Inmates Sentenced In Deadly 2017 Delaware Prison Riot

SMYRNA, Del. (CBS) - Three inmates were sentenced Friday for their roles in a deadly 2017 prison riot at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in New Castle County. Self-proclaimed riot leader Dwayne Staats was convicted of murder and was already serving a life sentence.

Staats, 37, received two life sentenced plus 153 years.

Jarreau Ayers, 38, was sentenced to 123 years, and 54-year-old Royal Downs was sentenced to three years.

Ayers and Downs were also serving life in prison for murder.

Correction officer Stephen Floyd was killed, two other guards were beaten during the riot, and a female counselor was held hostage for nearly 20 hours before she was rescued.
