Fugitive Goes On Trial In Philadelphia For 1992 Slaying Inside Crowded Restaurant

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A man who fled the U.S. before he could be charged with killing his wife's girlfriend in a crowded restaurant more than 20 years ago is on trial in Philadelphia.

Prosecutors say Santiago Pedroso started a new family in the Philippines after killing 41-year-old Delores Alvarez on Father's Day 1992.

The 73-year-old Pedroso was arrested after going to the U.S. Embassy in Manila for a passport two years ago.

The graying Pedroso shook his head "no" as a prosecutor described the shooting in opening statements Tuesday.

Then-waiter Walter White says he still recalls Alvarez ordering a chicken walnut salad just before shots rang out in front of Pedroso's wife and teenage daughter.

Prosecutor Richard Sax says Pedroso suspected his wife was romantically involved with Alvarez, from Newport Beach, California.
