Former Drexel Cop Facing Theft Charges Turns Himself In

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Drexel University police officer turned himself into authorities today after allegedly taking evidence from an investigation in January 2015.

Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Andrew Wellbrock says the investigation began when university police received a tip about marijuana in a student's room.

"In the course of arresting a student for marijuana possession, former officer Che Brown took money that belonged to the student that wasn't part of the investigation, and only returned the money when he was confronted a few days later about it."

Police took $500. But when the student went to retrieve the money, which was a gift from his grandmother, it wasn't in the same denominations.

Drexel immediately began an internal investigation and Brown was fired on February 2nd of last year.
