Flyers Wrap-Up Development Camp
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- The Flyers concluded their developmental camp in Voorhees on Tuesday, as their young prospects had the opportunity to show off their skills for the first time. Many of the players will head to the minor leagues before the start of the season, but Flyers Head Coach Craig Berube says everyone will get a fair chance when training camp arrives in September.
"All of these guys have an opportunity to make the hockey team," said Berube. "That's the way I look at it. They'll be evaluated at camp and we've got to do what's best for the player. That's what the organization will do."
The developmental camp featured five days of drills and coaching along with one day at Stone Harbor for the "Trial on the Isle". Players such as second round draft pick Nicolas Aube-Kubel immediately realized the benefits of their first NHL camp.
"I know that I'm stronger than last year," Aube-Kubel said. "Being 17 years old in juniors is hard because there are a lot of guys bigger than you. It's going to be easier now to take the puck or be more physical."
First round draft choice Travis Sanheim was also happy to be on the ice in a Flyers jersey for the first time. The defenseman also understands this camp is the first step in a lengthy process.
"This is my first development camp," said Sanheim. "It was a good camp. I got to meet the organization and the guys in it. This was a learning week for me to find out what I need to work on this summer and build on it."
For fans looking to see which prospects made the strongest impression, the true test will come during training camp. Berube emphasized the developmental camp was about the basics and not roster spots.
"We bring them in to teach them things and teach them about training and skill work on the ice," Berune said. "What impresses me is their focus more than anything. These are long days and they're doing a good job. They're willing to learn and putting in the work."
