Fire Tears Through Home In Whitpain Township

WHITPAIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- Crews battled a fire overnight at a home in Whitpain Township, Montgomery County.

Flames broke out around 3:30 a.m. at the three-story building along the 800 block of Dekalb Pike.

Firefighters arrived to heavy flames and smoke shooting from the top floor and roof of the home.

The fire quickly spread and grew to two alarms.

The cold temperatures were also a challenge for firefighters as water from the hoses quickly turned to ice, making for dangerous conditions.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries. Most of those injuries were a result of firefighters slipping and falling on the ice. One firefighter burned his hand.

The fire was placed under control several hours later, but not before damaging part of the home.

Officials say the building was under renovation and was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

There was no immediate word on what sparked the blaze.
