Education In The News In 2014

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Looking back at the world of education in 2014, there was much activity.
The Read by 4 campaign initiated by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, based on research showing the connection of reading performance with later school success, has engaged 152 communities focusing on skill building in the early school years.
Pre-K for Pennsylvania, a statewide effort, is moving quickly to enroll 3- and 4-year-olds and train their parents in strong sustainable programs to get them ready for school.
Common Core standards were adopted by almost every state although implementation has been difficult.
One thing that didn't happen was the passing of a revised elementary and secondary-education bill. The latest version, No Child Left Behind, dates back to the Bush administration.
At colleges and universities, binge drinking continues to be a problem and revelations about sexual assaults have prompted investigations and new rules on campuses.
And far too many students leave without finishing.
Much more work to be done in 2015.
