Dreams Of 'Holy War' Dashed: St. Joe's Loses, Nova Advances
By Ian Bush
BUFFALO, NY (CBS) - Dreams of an NCAA tournament Holy War have been dashed, with St. Joes overpowered by UConn in overtime, 89-81. But Villanova's not done dancing just yet.
It was a sluggish first half and at times it might have seemed like there was a lid over the three-point bucket — but the Wildcats found a way to win.
"I like to think that they're warming up," says 'Nova alum Ellen. "It took them a very long time. But they're warm now. So — bring on UConn." She came from DC to see her 'Cats knock off Milwaukee, 73-53.
As for the Hawks, they just didn't have the wings for OT with the Huskies — not the way they wanted the campaign to end.
"Once we went into overtime, they didn't have any legs left. That was it," says Jeralyn, Hawks supershooter Langston Galloway's mom. The senior getting a well-deserved standing ovation sendoff as fans chanted 'The Hawk Will Never Die.'
"It's devastating to go out like that," says St. Joe's sophomore Brad. "They go out fighting as hard as they can. We're just proud of them. It's just hard to see them go out like that."
But Nova alum Eric is glad a Holy War is off the table: "It would have been good for the whole city of Philadelphia, but my friends back home — I didn't want them beating us and have to listen to them for the rest of the year."
