Delaware Prepares For The Winter Storm
Newark, Del. (CBS) -- Northern parts of Delaware could see some of the heaviest snow totals out of this storm, and while residents are being urged to stay home, that's not the case for those whose jobs typically take them on the road.
"If you got everything you need, it shouldn't be that bad. It's better than being in a house because if you lose power, you can always turn on the truck," Donovan Carter, a truck driver from Alabama, told Eyewitness News.
A snow emergency will take effect in Newark at 9 p.m. tonight.
DelDOT says they're prepared; plows are ready, the plow tracker app is already activated, the rock salt is stocked and the brine is going down on roadways.
"The department actually has been tracking this over the last several days. Our efforts actually have started as early as last Monday," Don Weber, DelDOT's North District Engineer, told Eyewitness News.
Weber says a mild start to the winter season means road salt is at capacity, more than 43,000 tons, the equivalent in weight of about 22,000 cars.
"We have ample supplies of salt for this event," Weber said.
And crews are already trying to get a head start on Mother Nature.
"We've been pre-treating our roads in New Castle County and statewide over the past couple of days. Now it's just waiting for the event to start to happen."
Many Delaware shoppers though, aren't waiting one bit.
Plenty of people leaving supermarkets stocked up with the essentials so they're ready for whatever is heading our way.
