Crews Preparing For Potentially Icy Road Conditions
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In the wake of Sunday's snowfall, crews from around the Delaware Valley are hard at work cleaning and maintaining area roads as freezing temperatures threaten to make things icy.
Stephen Shapiro with NJDOT says they have more than 200 trucks out patrolling roadways and spreading salt:
"We pretreated all of our state highways with a brine solution which helps prevent any snow and ice from adhering to the roadway."
As far as Pennsylvania highways, PennDOT's Gene Blaum says they're watching conditions carefully, to see what the pavement temperatures are, and salting as necessary.
In Philadelphia, the streets department has a little more than a dozen salt trucks roaming the city, salting bridges and roads.
Shapiro also offers some advice for drivers who have to brave the conditions:
"It's important when you see the spreaders that are out there to stay behind them, give them plenty of room so they can spread their salt to get those roads in the best shape for you as you're driving."
And, he says, it's very important for motorists to slow down.
