Crash Involving Tractor Trailer Hauling Pallets Of Beer Temporarily Closes EB Schuylkill Expressway
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A serious crash involving a tractor trailer hauling pallets of beer forced the closing of the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway during the pre-dawn hours as crews cleaned up the mess.
The tractor trailer and a car became entangled in an accident on eastbound 76 before 1 a.m., just beyond the University Avenue exit.
The tractor trailer ended up crashing into the center cement median barrier, ripping open a large portion of the left side of the trailer, exposing its cargo – pallets of cans of beer.
One person suffered minor injuries in the crash.
PennDOT closed the highway for some six hours as a second tractor trailer was brought in and the beer was transferred to the other truck.
A tow truck then hooked up and moved the mangled rig.
PennDOT crews inspected the highway and spread sand to absorb oil that had spilled from the damaged truck's engine.
About 6:50 a.m, the eastbound lanes of the highway were reopened just in time for the heart of the rush hour.
