Could Choosing Better Foods Help You Ward Off The Flu?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- As the flu continues to spread and the vaccine isn't a perfect match, you might be wondering what you can do to prevent getting sick. The answer could be found in your kitchen.
Citrus fruits have vitamin C, which according to Main Line Health nutrition specialist Judy Matusky can help ward off colds and the flu this time of year. You should also eat a lot of colorful fruits and vegetables.
"There's a particular type of fiber found in mushrooms called beta-glucan, and that fiber seems to influence our gut microbiota to help reduce inflammation and boost some immunity," she says.
As for protein? "Seafood in particular, oysters and shrimp," Matusky says. "They're rich in two particular minerals -- selenium and zinc. These minerals can help maybe rid the body of the flu virus and help in the development of white blood cells.
You should be eating seven to nine servings of colorful fruits and vegetables every day. The more color, the more nutrients they contain.
Dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale contain an antioxidant called glutathione which boosts immunity.
