Company Heavily Recruiting Substitute Teachers For Philly Schools

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The company managing substitute teachers in Philadelphia is launching a billboard campaign in an effort to hire 5,000 people.
Look for billboards on I-95 and elsewhere, recruiting subs for Philly schools. Source4teachers, the Cherry Hill firm hired in June to fill sub jobs, has started the Philly5000.com campaign, says company spokesman Owen Murphy:
"We need between 5,000 and 7,000 substitutes available to work for every teacher absence. So for 1,000 absences from teachers, that translates into 5,000 if not 7,000 substitutes that need to be available to us."
But so far, the company is well short of that goal. Murphy says the company hopes to have 1,000 teachers by the start of school Tuesday.
He says salaries are competitive with neighboring districts, but retired Philadelphia teachers who were subs say Source4Teachers pays about half of the $200 daily rate the district was paying.
