BORDENTOWN, N.J., (CBS) -- Just days before dying in a chain reaction crash on the New Jersey Turnpike, 52-year-old Daryll C. Williams enjoyed one of his proudest moments.
Williams was inducted Saturday into the Bordentown Regional Athletic Hall of Fame.
"He was the man, he walked in and he was so happy. He was genuinely proud to be part of Bordentown which is something that I'll never forget," says Bordentown athletic director Joe Sprague.
Williams was a stand-out athlete on the baseball, wrestling and football teams.
During his senior year 1981 he was captain of the football team and set a school record rushing for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns in one game.
Monday night Williams was driving home from his job at the U.S. Postal Service processing center in Kearny, NJ when he was killed as part of a 40-vehicle chain reaction crash.
"We're trying to get through this, it's very sudden it happened," says Williams' stepson Aaron Brown.
Brown says Williams married his mother Rosalyn H. Williams about 5 years ago and was there for him when his biological father died in 2012.
"Daryll was my mom's best friend and they loved each other dearly and it's just really heavy right now," says Brown.
Monday night's crash is still under investigation by New Jersey State Police and the Commissioner of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority has called for a review of winter operations leading up to the incident.
