Cape May Residents Speak Out On Controversial Demotion Of City's Police Chief

CAPE MAY, NJ (CBS) – Cape May residents had a chance to voice their opinions about a controversial decision to demote the city's police chief.

On Tuesday, Captain Robert Sheehan received a standing ovation when he entered the meeting at Congress Hall.

The Council took the action on March 3rd because they were concerned Sheehan was part of an investigation into a subordinate's possible abuse of comp time.

The prosecutor said after the meeting that Sheehan was not facing any criminal charges.

"Maybe when this investigation is over, and if Rob Sheehan is exonerated, which I hope he will be, we will reconsider our discussion and our decision," the Mayor said.

One councilman resigned in protest of the demotion during the March 3rd meeting.
