Busiest Shipping Day Of The Year For Fed Ex
By Mike DeNardo
FT. WASHINGTON, Pa. (CBS) --- Parcel service Fed Ex is expecting its busiest day ever today, as packages are sorted, trucked and delivered for the holidays.
Fed Ex expects to deliver a record 22½ million packages on this day.
Here at the Fort Washington facility, station manager Rosalyn Jamal says 1½ times the normal volume of packages will be taken off 18-wheelers and sorted.
"As it's going down the belt, these guys are scanning right here with those guns. And as they scan it, it puts the route number of the package of the courier that's delivering it," Jamal says.
Operations manager Mike Schmickle says the company hired extra seasonal workers to prevent a repeat of last year's late holiday deliveries.
"We learn off of what happened last year. We used those numbers to plan for this year. So this next week and a half -- this is what we live for," said Schmickle.
Jamal and Schmickle say that so far this facility has kept up with the increased seasonal demand.
UPS will be busy today, too, although they expect their peak day to be next Monday, when they deliver 34 million packages. The US Postal Service expects to move a record 640 million pieces of mail today.
